Istanbul has been designated as a "Design City" by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The application process, which started in November 2016, continued in June 2017 with the application of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and in October 2017, Istanbul became a part of "Creative Cities Network".
With its multicultural structure, rich history and unique geographical location, Istanbul's historic four districts are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Istanbul, both archaic and dynamic, is a multi-cultural creativity and sharing ecosystem in which new experiences are passed on and knowledge is transferred to new generations. The city, which is the center of attention of the whole world, is a member of the United Cities and Local Administrations (UCLG) Organization and was declared the European Capital of Culture in 2010.
In Istanbul over the last five years many organizations have been organized for professionals. "Turkey Design Week" internationally recognized and appreciated by many designers, design schools and industrialists bring together every year and serves Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards. While "Istanbul Design Week" serves as an international exhibition for the products of designers, "Grafist" ("Istanbul Graphic Design Week") brings together design students and professionals. Also, focusing on sustainable design "EKODesign" conference, "Istanbul Fashion Week", "Architecture and Design Summit", "Turkey Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week," "Alldesign - Creative Industries and Design Suppliers Exhibition and Conference", "Structure-Turkeybuild" (Building Materials, Construction Materials and Technologies Exhibition"," Fashionist Istanbul Furniture Fair "," IstanbulLight" (Exhibition and Congress of Lighting Technologies) and "Istanbul Packaging Industry Fair" are among the other valuable organizations in the city. Within the last five years, among the public organizations that have attracted attention, "Istanbul Design Biennial" which aims to increase public awareness of "design", to solve global design difficulties and to provide solutions and to reveal the design potential of Istanbul region, "Istancool" (Istanbul Art and Culture Festival), which brings together talented and creative minds from many countries and disciplines and hosts public panels, workshops, exhibitions and film screenings, and "Contemporary Istanbul/Design Department" which displays Turkish and global design products also are leading organizations in the field.
